Skyfire Flash-friendly iPhone app now available, then not

Apple has now approved Skyfire 2.0, the world's first mobile browser for the iPhone and iPod touch that provides users with a full Flash-friendly web experience.

As previously reported on Pocket-lint, the Skyfire app manages to play Flash video by converting Flash into H.264 (a codec for HTML5).

"We are excited to launch in the Apple App Store,” said Skyfire CEO Jeff Glueck.  “Our technology meets a need for consumers who want to get more from their web browsing on iPhones and iPod touches, including videos designed for Flash Player and many other new browsing features".

As the Skyfire browser is based on the same WebKit core used by Safari, users will still get all the capabilities of Safari plus new features from Skyfire.

UPDATE: Skyfire seems to have been overwhelmed and has pulled the iPhone app from the store. "Skyfire for iPhone has been received with unbelievable enthusiasm. We are working really hard to increase capacity and will be accepting new purchases from the App Store as soon as we can support it.
Within 5 hours, Skyfire for iPhone became the top grossing app, the third highest paid app overall and the top application in the Utilities category. Wow!
Thanks, Robert."

SkyFire for iPhone pulled from the App Store, and it’s not Apple’s doing

Didn’t get a chance to check out the Flash-friendly-ish SkyFire browser when it went live in the iPhone App Store earlier today? Sorry Charlie, it’s gone — and not because Apple decided to reverse their approval.

Truth be told, the problem SkyFire’s having is a good one: too many users, too fast. As a result, the video quality of any transcoded Flash videos plummeted.

Skyfire pulls iPhone app from App Store due to overloaded servers

Just five hours into availability, high demand on Skyfire servers forced them to pull the Skyfire iOS app from the App Store

The app was a standalone Webkit browser. When used to visit a site with Flash video, the app presents a thumbnail. When tapped, the video is transcoded on Skyfire's servers to HTML5 and streamed to the device. Ed. note: Download Squad got a hands-on with the app before the servers turned to molten slag and the app was pulled.
